Playgrounds, Paths, Penguins, Ponds, and Plenty More: The Best Kansas City Parks
As the "Paris of the Plains," Kansas City is known for its rich jazz heritage and bustling nightlife. It's the place to be if you like hard-swinging blues, iconic cocktails, and slow-smoked burnt ends.
Kansas City also offers ample recreation and entertainment for outdoorsy, activity-loving locals. Also known as the "City of Fountains," it has over 221 public parks and more than 200 eye-catching water features. Whether you enjoy hiking, birdwatching, waterplay, or climbing, there are open public spaces sure to enchant you. Below is our shortlist of some of the best Kansas City parks to visit.
Loose Park
Named after the founder of the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company (Sunshine Biscuits), Jacob L. Loose Park spans 75 acres. A major site in the 1864 American Civil War Battle of Westport, Loose Park operated as the Kansas City Country Club golf course until 1927.
This historic park features a 1.5-acre rose garden with nearly 150 varieties of roses, a massive garden center with on-site horticultural exhibits, and lots of open green spaces. Visitors have access to multiple paved walking paths, a duck- and turtle-filled pond, tennis courts, and a large, inclusive playground. It's a popular spot for photography, wedding proposals, picnics, and more memorable personal events.
Loose Park has more fountains than any other park in Kansas City. There are three, and each fountain has its own charm. As the visual centerpiece of the Loose Park Rose Garden, the Laura Conyers Smith Fountain is a chalice-shaped water feature that connects to a nearby lily pond. There's also the Loose Park Lake Fountain and the Loose Park Wall Fountain. In summer, park-goers can visit the seasonal splash pad to socialize, get wet, and stay cool.
Cave Spring Park
The little "hidden forest in the city," Cave Spring Park is one of the best Kansas City parks for a mini adventure. This site includes a dedicated scout encampment, an expansive picnic center, and the Art Clark Memorial Nature Center, which features year-round, changing exhibits. Guests have access to an active bird sanctuary, butterfly garden, and a wildlife pond habitat.
Just as its name implies, Cave Spring Park is also home to a shallow cave for visitors to explore. There’s also a natural spring that feeds into a nearby creek.
Cave Spring Park boasts nearly six miles of winding, dirt-paved trails to hike, with paved paths that are suitable for hikers of all levels. Much like Loose Park, Cave Spring Park is steeped in historical significance. It's certified by the National Park Service as a historic site along the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe trails.
It was once a popular water spot and overnight resting place for early settlers and traders. In addition to offering close-up views of various wading birds, songbirds, monarch butterflies, and swallowtails, it's also a great place for viewing the historic stone chimneys of homesteads from the 1800s.
Penguin Park
Penguin Park in Kansas City features a head-turning collection of giant, hand-built animal structures. Crafted in the 1960s, these larger-than-life figures include a penguin, a massive giraffe, a circus-style elephant, and a kangaroo with a built-in slide. These 23- to 26-foot structures are surrounded by interactive playground equipment such as merry-go-rounds, a whimsical fire truck, and more.
There are even multiple small-sized penguins scattered throughout the space that serve as the base for drinking fountains. Guests can hike around a wooded fishing lake via paved trails or dine in shaded picnic areas. This 3.4-acre park is a multi-generational playspace and a much-cherished local landmark.
